Bharat Shah Capital Ideas Private Limited is a Mumbai-based investment management firm focused on Indian equities. We exist for one purpose: to compound our clients’ capital over long periods by owning a small number of outstanding businesses, bought at sensible prices and held with patience.

Our Founder, Mr. Bharat Shah has spent over three decades in Indian equity market, building a long record of identifying high-quality businesses early and staying invested as they compound over many years. For more than two decades he led the equity investment business at ASK Investment Managers, where he helped build one of India’s best-known portfolio management franchises and shaped the investment philosophy behind it. Bharat Shah Capital Ideas is the next chapter of that journey: an independent firm built around the same principles, with the founder’s own conviction at its centre.

Investment objective

The objective is to attain superior long-term value creation by investing into outstanding businesses enjoying superior moats, with prospects of strong growth while addressing large size of opportunity, run by high-quality managements and buy such businesses at meaningful margin of safety and to hold them patiently and long enough so as to unlock superior compounding investment returns.

Investment strategy and process

The investment strategy emphasises bottom-up stock selection (keeping the macro-landscape in backdrop), focussing on fundamental value creating traits as key filters for stock selection.

  • Impregnable character of the business

  • Capital efficiency

  • Ethical and competent management

  • Meaningful and rising cash flows over time

All these filters have to run concurrently, and each attribute has to pass minima test such that excess of any attribute cannot cover deficit of other/s.

How the process works

  1. A dynamic universe of ideas

    The process seeks to maintain a dynamic universe of ideas, using all the above filters concurrently. The list would be updated from time to time based on emergence of new opportunities and/or diminution of the existing ones.

  2. Qualitative filters first

    The process seeks to use qualitative filters first and ahead of the quantitative ones.

  3. Intrinsic value

    Only after qualitative tests are passed, that the focus moves towards evaluation of quantitative factors, for determining intrinsic value of each business (to be updated periodically in light of new insights and emergent realities).

  4. Margin of safety

    Determination of value is the foundation for setting an adequate margin of safety for each stock and to pursue with discipline this process long enough to create superior investment outcomes.

Each stock to be selected must blend with the overall planned character of the portfolio and therefore, each position in the portfolio has to be in harmony with the broad portfolio ethos.
